NICS Centre for Workplace Health Improvement

Recruitment

OHS provides pre-employment health assessments as appropriate, for those joining the NICS. New recruits may complete a health declaration and if the post requires a mandatory Occupational Health assessment or there is a concern regarding health the individual may be required to undergo a health assessment.

For most administrative or office type jobs, a health assessment would only be necessary if the health declaration indicates that there is a serious health problem or some difficulty with mobility or speech or hearing, for example. The main purpose of the assessment is to confirm that the individual is generally fit for the job and to indicate whether or not any adjustments to the job will be needed.

Applicants for more specialised jobs (e.g vocational drivers or confined-space workers) will need to attend the OHS for a mandatory pre-employment medical assessment.  This will include some baseline health measurements (such as for hearing, visual acuity, colour vision etc) as well as a general examination. In some cases, further tests may need to be arranged and, on occasions, medical reports may have to be sought from an applicant’s GP or hospital specialist (with the individual’s consent, of course) before the assessment can be completed.

You will be seen by an Occupational Health professional – this may either be a specialist nurse, occupational therapist (mental health) or doctor. All OHS professional staff have the appropriate knowledge, skills and experience in their specialist field and are well qualified and competent to advise and carry out a comprehensive range of occupational health assessments.

OHS referrals are made by Departmental Human Resource (DHR), referral forms are held on the HR Connect site.
